In this video the Altberg bootmaker discusses the different ways in which nubuck can be treated to either continue its breathability or to enhance its water repellency.
ONCE TREATED WITH LEDER-GRIS THE CHANGE TO THE NUBUCK FINISH IS IRREVERSIBLE
Altbergs Nubuck leathger is made form the same European hides as their water repellent full grain leather.
The only difference is the way the tannery finish the surface of the leather.
Nubuck is sanded and brushed on the surface to increase breathability.
Full grain leather has a smooth finish on which a thin coating has been applied.
NOTE - All leather/nubuck will eventually harden and crack - especially in areas where the upper flexes during use. Regular use of Leder-Bok or Leder-Gris will extend the time before which this flex cracking will occur.
As boots get wet, then dry out, the leather/nubuck will eventually harden and crack - in the areas of the upper which flex in use. Regular use of Leder-Gris will extend the time before which flex-cracking will occur.
